This year, we have had a colourful and record hot summer which is inevitably followed by autumn and winter. Due to this, as cooler period is approaching, the issue of heating and thermal energy tariffs becomes even more topical.

As of 1 August 2014, the tariff of 57.40 EUR/MWh, excluding VAT, is applied for the thermal energy supplied. The thermal energy tariff for 1 MWh is determined, based on the report published by the joint-stock company Latvijas Gāze on 8 August a.c. in the official newspaper of the Republic of Latvia Latvijas Vēstnesis – regarding the final tariffs for the trade of natural gas in August that complies with the trade price of natural gas in the amount of 284.57 EUR/thousand nm3. On 1 January 2015, the electricity market will open for households. The market opening principles remain the same: residents have to choose from the offers that they deem most suitable, weighing the products offered by different traders. At the moment six traders confirmed their readiness to trade electricity: AS Latvenergo, Ltd Baltkom, Ltd BCG Riga, Ltd 220 Enerģija, Ltd Starfit Energy and Ltd Win Baltic.

To support socially vulnerable population groups, the legislation stipulates financial aid for large families. From 1 January 2015, they will be eligible to purchase 300 kWh of electricity per month for the price of the current Start Tariff. Poor and low-income individuals, in turn, will retain the opportunity to purchase 100 kWh of electricity per month for the aforementioned price. Latvenergo AS will implement the State-defined aid in 2015.
